Didactics and methodology in the specialisation area of emotional and social development

Partial study programme Didactics and Methodology with a focus on Emotional and Social Development in the M. Ed. - Teaching Qualification for Special Needs Education

The Learning and Emotional and Social Development sub-degree programmes of the M. Ed. each consist of three modules. The modules do not build on each other, the study of the sub-programmes can be individually designed. However, it is recommended to study the FSL1 and FSE1 modules first, then either the FSL2 or FSE2 module and finally either the FSL3 or FSE3 module before the final thesis.

The FSL1 and FSE1 modules focus on didactics and methodology in the respective specialisms and serve to prepare students for the practical semester. The modules each consist of three seminars. All seminars are offered every semester and students can organise the order of the seminars themselves.

The FSL2 and FSE2 modules serve to prepare for, accompany and follow up on the practical semester. Students can choose whether to take the FSL2 module or the FSE2 module for the practical semester depending on their specialisation.

The FSL3 and FSE3 modules accompany an individual research project and serve in particular as preparation for the final thesis ("Master's thesis"). Students can choose whether to take the FSL3 module or the FSE3 module for the research project depending on their specialisation.

No lectures are offered in the modules, only seminars, so that the knowledge and skills acquired in the B. Ed. can be deepened, practised and applied.

The forms of teaching and learning are always participative, action-orientated, application-oriented, empirically based and with a strong reference to discourse. Almost all courses in the Learning and Emotional and Social Development sub-degree programmes in the M. Ed. are evaluated every semester. The results of the evaluation are discussed with the students in the courses. The feedback is used to continuously improve the courses and examinations.

Supervisors and topics

The topic of the Master's thesis is discussed with the examiner. As a rule, the topics are based on the examiners' research projects and specialisations. The professors and staff of the departments are available as examiners. Detailed information on research, projects and theses can be found on the pages of the departments.

Type and requirements

As a rule, Master's theses in the special education sub-degree programme are written on an empirical project. This includes, among other things

  • independent literature research including the summarisation of empirical findings
  • qualitative and/or quantitative data collection and analysis (e.g. correlations, t-test, qualitative summarised content analysis)
  • writing the term paper along the scientific discovery process (cf. Peters & Dörfler)

The relevant knowledge - also in relation to the programmes (e.g. JASP or MAXQDA) - is assumed.
