Master of Education - Vocational College and Dual Master
The Master of Education Berufskolleg and Dual Master consists of four compulsory modules. BIL 1 and BIL 2 are the two extensive modules with more than 10 CP each. BIL 1 focuses on student learning at school with a focus on diagnostics, teaching and support, as well as aspects of special educational support. BIL 2 deals with the vocational school system, theories and development of vocational schools and the basics of research in the education system. BIL 3 is the educational science preparation and support for the practical semester. In addition, BIL 4 looks at German for migrant pupils. The research project (BIL 5) and the Master's thesis can be completed in Educational Sciences. All modules and module parts can be taken in any order and are offered every semester. However, we recommend taking the lectures before the seminars if possible.

This module is a compulsory elective module for students on the Master of Education Teaching at Primary Schools degree programme. The research project can also be attended in one of the other subjects if this is provided for in the examination regulations of MEd 11 of the respective subject.
General
The following must be completed in the modulecompulsory coursemust be attended in the module:
a) Accompanying seminar to the research project (seminar, 2 SWS)
Please enquire with the supervisor (examiner) of your research project which course should be attended for your individual research project (these can be, for example, research-oriented seminars with a specific focus on content or courses with a research methodology orientation).
An overview of the accompanying courses and colloquia offered for each semester can be found in the course catalogue (Wusel)
Required credits:
The module comprises a total of 6 CP, which are achieved via the final module examination (6 CP, written term paper) in which you present your research project. As a rule, the supervisor of the research project is also the examiner.
Research project:
In the Research Project module (MEd. BIL 5 or SP_BIL 5 (PO 2017 SP_BIL )), students are instructed in how to translate educational science questions into empirical research work.
In the associated accompanying seminar (2 SWS), students are supported in their research work. This includes, for example, problem-orientated familiarisation with quantitative or qualitative methods or the mixed method approach as well as the development of a research status with the derivation of their own research question, study planning, data collection and data protection, presentation of results and interpretation. The preparation of systematic literature reviews is also possible.
The accompanying seminar is optionally offered in three different versions:
-
The research activity of the students takes place within the framework of an existing (externally funded) research project in a field of work with a question specified by the project. In the accompanying seminar, only questions related to this project are dealt with.
-
The question of the student's research project is developed by the lecturers and students together in the accompanying seminar
-
Students work independently on a research question and a corresponding research project. In the accompanying seminar, the necessary skills are taught and support structures are offered.
How do you find a suitable lecturer for your project?
You can use the "Research and work focus", which you can find on the website for each lecturer (under "Work areas"->"Team"->Person selection), as a guide. You should make sure that your research project matches the lecturer's research and work focus. If you are unable to identify a suitable lecturer for your project from the information on the website, please contact ▸ifbstudienberatung{at}uni-wuppertal.de.
For students on the Master of Education Teaching at Vocational Colleges programme, this module is a compulsory elective module. The final thesis ("Master's thesis") can also be taken in one of the other degree programmes.
General information
Final thesis ("Master's thesis") totalling 15 CP and a duration of 6 months.
The thesis can be revised once within a period of 4 weeks in the event of significant deficiencies.
Prerequisite
Proof of at least one third of the credit points to be achieved in the Master's degree programme in which the thesis is written is a prerequisite for the topic of the thesis to be issued.
Thesis ("Master's thesis")
There are two ways to write a thesis ("Master's thesis"):
a) You join a prescribed project or
b) You choose your own project.
a) prescribed project
Some lecturers offer the opportunity to carry out a research project following their own research. Information on the projects can be found under "Research projects for students" on the pages of the work areas (under "Work areas" -> further information on this can be found in the respective ▸work areas under "Student research projects and Master's theses"
b) Your own project
Alternatively, you can also choose your own project. To do this, you should summarise your topic, your research question and an idea for your own empirical study in a 1-2 page synopsis. You can then use this synopsis to email the lecturers to ask whether they are willing to supervise your thesis ("Master's thesis").
